Abstract:

The article discusses the possibility of systematizing the numerous interpretations of Fodor M. Dostoevsky’s texts by a foreign-culture reader, as well as the personality of the author himself, that we find in foreign literary criticism, in foreign films and theatrical productions based on Dostoevsky’s works, in speeches by politicians and religious figures, in opinions about Dostoevsky expressed by famous writers or philosophers, and in other sources of material that somehow reflect the vision of Dostoevsky by other-culture bearers, both Western and Eastern. In order to formalize the data, the term “interpretative constant” is introduced, i. e. an idea, thought, research direction, value judgment, etc. regarding Dostoevsky’s work put in a concise form. The possibility of classifying interpretative constants based on their association around a particular concept — a key one in the author’s thesaurus — is shown.

Keywords: Dostoevsky, works of fiction, perception, interpretation, different-culture bearers, interpretive constant
