Abstract: The paper studies the image of Ancient Rome in A. Maikov’s traveler’s diary of 1842–43. The poet’s thought concentrates not on the events of daily life, but on the features of the social and spiritual life of the Roman people that found their reflection in the architectural monuments, which served the needs of those people. It is indicative that Maikov chooses as his object not cathedrals, but buildings of social purpose (amphitheaters and circuses) that serve both a venue for all the social strata and a means to join various classes while watching performances.

Keywords: diary, maikov, ancient rome, history, architecture, social mentality
