Abstract: The paper analyzes the early prose of A.I. Solzhenitsyn; it considers the problem of the interdependence of spiritual and empirical freedom and the process of weaning people from realizing the very need of freedom as a condition for the completeness of human life. The image of the prison camp in the story «One Day of Ivan Denisovich» is presented as an artistic model of a state in which a prisoner becomes a more recognizable figure than a free man.
