ArticleName: Promising research directions the works of Iraida Yakovlevna Selyutina on the phonetics of the languages of the peoples of Siberia and adjacent regions Authors: K. N. Burnakova, А. A. Abstract: Iraida Yakovlevna Selyutina has made, and continues to make, a substantial personal contribution to the documentation, preservation, and study of the languages of the Indigenous peoples of Siberia, especially in the area of phonetics. Under her leadership, a research team employing objective instrumental methods has investigated key issues in phonetic typology while further developing the scientific concepts of V. M. Nadelyaev, the founder of the Siberian Phonological School. The use of experimental phonetic data as a historical-linguistic source has yielded new theoretical results of significance for phonetic typology and ethno-linguistics. In particular, the principles underlying the structural and taxonomic organization of phonological systems in the Turkic languages of Southern Siberia have been identified. A new type of consonant system, organized according to the functioning of the laryngeal–pharyngeal section of the articulatory apparatus, has been introduced into the typological classification of the languages of Siberia. A comparable typological tendency has also been observed in the vowel systems of the region. Selyutina’s work is distinguished by a unique approach that treats the articulatory-acoustic base as a key component of the cultural and linguistic code of an ethnic group. This perspective constitutes an important element of Russia’s biological, cultural, and linguistic unity, as it seeks to identify invariant features that support the preservation of linguistic and cultural diversity. Her research provides a theoretical foundation for the development of a balanced language policy aimed at harmonizing interethnic relations, addressing humanitarian challenges, and preventing ethnic conflicts within a global multiethnic society.
