Abstract: The review analyzes a collection of documentary materials on the work of the Department of Russian language and literature of the Imperial Academy of Sciences during the first 50 years of its activity devoted to the problems of the formation of Russian historical and philological science. It is emphasized that published letters, reports, minutes, projects, and provisions have cultural value as evidence of a controversial era. Department of Russian language and literature united the creative and administrative efforts of historians, religious educators, linguists, and literary scholars in the study and conservation of Russian heritage. The first part of the book is remarkable for the publication of unique documents, with the names of outstanding figures of Russian history and literature being involved – count S. S. Uvarov, Metropolitan Filaret, A. Kh. Vostokov, M. P. Pogodin, and others. It is noted that the facts on the scientific and literary works of F. I. Tyutchev, the election of V. I. Dahl as an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences, the celebration of anniversaries of N. M. Karamzin, I. A. Krylov, V. A. Zhukovskiy, etc., are of great importance for current research. Attention is also paid to the fact that the materials presented illustrate the issues of state policy on the organization of academic work, provide information about the publishing activities of the Department of Russian language and literature and its financial situation. Particular emphasis is placed on the importance of the publication of notes on the scientific works of the academicians of 1841–1891 and rare photo materials for the history of Russian philology. To conclude, the collected documents represent a fundamental set of historcal facts about the period of the most fruitful work of the Department of Russian language and literature and are of great practical value in modern education as objective documents of the development of the humanities in Russia.
