Abstract: The story «Fertility» by Vsevolod Ivanov is analyzed as the compositional and poeticosemantic center of the book «The secrecy of the secrecies» (1927) and as a work that has expressed most completely the author’s attitude to the revolution and his «last meditations» about the changes that have happened in the country. The story is presented in an inexorable connection with the previous works, first of all with the short novel «Buddha’s return» (1923) making it possible to decode the senses hidden in it, mainly in the aspect of the artistic incarnation of the concepts of «poverty-wealth», «town-village» relations, and present the writer’s creative behavior as the expression of an integral vision of the complex reality of the 1920s and the profound textual coherence of his poetic world.

Keywords: vsevolod ivanov, «fertility», motif of ‘poverty-wealth’, sense decoding, textual coherence
