Abstract:

The article focuses on the difficult relationship between Maxim Gorky and Panteleimon Ro-manov. Gorky reported in his correspondence that he highly appreciated Romanov’s satirical stories. But the novel “Rus”, which Romanov considered as his best creation and the work of his whole life, was treated by Gorky in a completely different way. He simply mocked this work and left numerous marks on the margins of its edition, which Romanov had sent to him as a gift. Gorky also disliked a positive review that critic Nikolay Fatov, who always supported Romanov, had left about the novel. Some letters from Fatov to Romanov where the figure of Gorky was discussed have been preserved. The article introduces into scientific use excerpts from these letters. A characteristic of Gorky’s page-by-page edits of the novel is also given, and Romanov’s reaction to Gorky’s remarks about “Rus” is traced.
