Abstract: In the article, in the aspect of the interaction between classics and fiction, a deliberately literary debut is analyzed. The functioning of the secondary text is studied through the mechanisms of attribution of authorial poetics at the level of the plot, style and reception, taking into account the pragmatics of the participation of the agents of the publishing process: writer, publisher, literary criticism. A special episode from the history of Russian fiction - the appearance in the press of the story “The Double” after the arrest of so-called “first Russian socialists” (“petrashevtsy”) – is regarded as typical for the field of fiction and non-standard for writing ethics. It is no coincidence that the author of the story, brother of Petrashevsky Dmitry Akhsharumov, Nikolai Akhsharumov hid his authorship for the rest of his life, and critics and contemporaries met this work with bewilderment. In many reviews, from our point of view, there is a veiled comparison of the newly appeared “Double” with the Petersburg poem of Dostoevsky, whose name, for obvious reasons, was “a figure of silence”. In the article, the boundaries and possibilities of the secondary text are considered: starting from the plot of Dostoevsky’s absurdist story, Akhsharumov returns normality to her, carrying out a kind of reverse translation of the work. The debut work of Akhsharumov not only determined his literary reputation, but also the obvious direction of criticism against him: he was perceived first of all (not always, by the way, justified) as Dostoevsky's epigone. Did Akhsharumov himself want to, or hoped to make a splash, to become a new Dostoevsky, a pupil who surpassed the teacher? It is not possible to answer this question clearly, but it is obvious that Akhsharumov’s “Double” defines the profile of the writer’s author's personality with his passion for other names in literature and life and the specific sociocultural role of the epigone – literally following in the footsteps. Summarizing, we note: the phrase “The Double of Mr. Double”, pronounced in the title of the article, was used by N. A. Nekrasov in a concrete historical and literary situation about a specific text, but his semantic capacity seems to describe a whole range of imitative phenomena. Indeed, the evolution of literature is marked not only by the constant indignation of the literary field and by the adoption of precedent texts, but also by a kind of duplication and multiplication, as a result of which rudiments and atavisms of style, plot, narrative are more quickly recognized. Therefore, the observations described above can be extended to many phenomena of the fictional, so-called. epigone literature.
