Abstract:

Max Bense (1910–1990) has got widely known for his work in the fields of aesthetics, information science and text linguistics. His main scientific achievement has become information aesthetics that combines information theory, semiotics and classical aesthetics. Most significantly, he has contributed to the development of a conceptual apparatus for text theory; some of his ideas have importantly impacted the advancement of linguistics in Germany. In particular, Bense has introduced the term Textsorte (‘a sort of text’) that has proved to be largely accepted by German linguists. This paper describes Bense’s approach to information aesthetics and text theory, reveals the relationship between the mathematical sciences and humanities in his works. The origins of Bense’s terminological creativity are explored on the example of the Textsorte (‘a sort of text’) definition.

Keywords: aesthetics, information theory, semiotics, text linguistics, cybernetics, terminology
