Abstract: General evaluation meanings are considered universal and capable of penetrating into any speech expression. On this basis, the possibility of constructing a functional-semantic field of evaluation is denied; instead, it is proposed to focus on the means – in particular, syntactic constructions – that facilitate the expression of evaluative meanings. As one of such means, a construction with a relatively young conjunction togda kak

‘whereas’ functioning in a juxtaposition sense as a coordinate one, is considered. The structure of the juxtaposition meaning is considered. It is shown that the condition licensing the occurrence of an assessment accompanying juxtaposition is the scalar character of the feature, according to which two situations are juxtaposed: if the values of this feature can be located on a certain scale, then the scale ranges are easily assigned general assessment values ‘good’ vs ‘bad’. It is emphasized that, according to the materials of the concordance of structures with the togda kak conjunction, in most of the modern Russian comparative statements estimated values are present.

Keywords: Russian language, syntax, general evaluation meanings, juxtaposition construction, togda kak
