Name: Fernando Pessoa's Poetic Bilingualism

Abstract: The article is devoted to bilingualism of the famous Portugal poet Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935). He bequeathed a corpus of poetic texts in Portuguese as well as English. Pessoa’s heteronymy (multiple subjectification) allows not only escape from the priority identification linked to a definite language, but also denies self-definition as such. It is important to treat bilingualism as a key to other semiotic transfers as Pessoa’s experience demonstrates. Pessoa’s bilingualism and cultural transfers may serve as a model of his cosmopolitan nationalism theory and esoteric practices and as a precedent model for the creation of poetic texts in contemporary literature.

Keywords: bilingualism, heteronymy, semiotic transfer, subject, Pessoa
