Abstract: The paper analyzes the artistic space organization of the stories «Sisters of the Cross», «The Fifth Plague», and «The Wailing Ditch» by A. M. Remizov and reveals the role of the spatial opposition «capitals vs. provinces» in the texts under analysis. Owing to the said opposition, in the story «The Sisters of the Cross» «the alien is appropriated» via the spontaneity of rumor. The story «The Fifth Plague» depicts a worldwide scale province with unstable special characteristics. In «The Wailing Ditch» the opposition «capitals vs. provinces» becomes part of a higher-level opposition «Russia vs. Europe». There arises an acute opposition between «the Own», Russian, and «the Alien», European.
