Abstract: The paper considers some peculiarities of the traditional Russian beliefs about man’s posthumous fate. A comparison is drawn between the Old Russian Apocrypha «The Mother of God’s Purgatory» and the camp poem «Amnesty» by Yu.O. Dombrovsky (1940), which reflects the development of the idea of «mercy to the fallen» in Russian literature.

Keywords: christianity and literature, eschatology, apocrypha, old russian literature, camp literature
