Abstract: The paper deals with the research on the phasal meaning and the cognitive foundations of its representation in the English language. It focuses on the main phases of the action and on the linguistical peculiarities of representing them in notional verbs as well as on the conditions of their functioning in the structure of a compound verbal phase predicate.
