Abstract: The article investigates the problems of rendering the psychological portrait of the Russian character in German translations of «The Brothers Karamasov». The category of stikhiynost’, which plays a crucial role in the author’s concept of man, is realized through specific features of Dostoyevsky’s style and finds its most remarkable represen-tation in the heroes’ direct speech and the surrounding phrases. The translations demon-strate different approaches to conveying the relevant peculiarities of the original.
