Abstract: The paper deals with orographic terms in the language of «Secret History of Mongols» with stems of figurative words. Such words forming a spacious layer of Altaic languages’ lexica help to restore a visual image of objects and to get a full notion about their appearance. Dominant role of such terms proves important meaning of acoustic and visual perception in the process of nomination.

Keywords: orography, semantics, word-building, etymology, figurativeness, shape, visual perception
