Abstract: The paper provides a chronology of the appearance of the works in the genre of the novel in the pages of the leading newspapers published in Tomsk in the late 19th – early 20th centuries «Siberian newspaper», «Siberian bulletin», «Siberian echoes», «Siberian Light». Consistently considered are their contents, evaluated the specificity associated with the publication of periodicals. Particular attention is given to the novels by K. M. Stanyukovich, V. A. Dolgorukov, D. Arsenyev, V. V. Kuritsyn, V. V. Nevsky, written specifically for local publications, and mostly based on the Siberian material. The author of the paper traces the genesis of the genre «the newspaper novel» from social and autobiographical to adventurous, criminal, revolutionary. On the basis of the investigated material she draws an inference about the dynamics of the genre, connected with a change in the readership, as well as about the importance of the novel for the publishers of periodicals, and outlines the prospects for her further research.
