Abstract: The paper deals with the image of «The Land of the Nety» in the artistic world of S. D. Krzhizhanovsky. Throughout his life, the writer repeatedly referred to this image. «The Land of the Nety» is not only the subject of Krzhizhanovsky’s artistic reflections, but of his scientific discourse as well. This is indicated by his literary work «Countries that do not Exist» (1937), which arose from his original concept of the short novel «The Land of the Nety» (1922). This short novel serves as a peculiar literary manifesto of the author of «Fairy Tales for Child Prodigies» and «The Return of Baron Munkhausen». This short novel is the reflection of the writer’s world-view, his philosophical views, his attitude to religion and creative work. Krzhizhanovsky believed himself to be a «nety», an inhabitant of a nonexistent country of literature. Testifying to this are his letters and diary notes. Having no possibility to realize his potential in the literary space of his period, the author of the philosophical novels delved deeply into the sphere of artistic projects. The poetics of his works lined up not as a result of a dialogue with the culture which he represented, but as a dialogue with his literary predecessors, who in his imagination became real inhabitants of the Land of the Nety.
