Abstract: The human psychic setup represents a dynamic system, organized in a hierarchical manner and including two major subsystems: the conscious and the unconscious. In the scientific psychological discourse the knowledge about these areas and psychic phenomena peculiar to them is organized by means of metaphorical modeling. The present paper considers the organization of psychological knowledge on the basis of the frame structure of the notion «depth». The psyche is represented as a space, which is strictly subdivided into two local areas: the surface and the depth. The consciousness is metaphorically denoted as a surface, and the mental processes characteristic for the consciousness are likened to the manner of moving to the surface. The metaphor of the unconscious level is the depth of the space. The unconscious phenomena are presented as something that is in the depth of the space, where they are formed. Participating in presenting the knowledge about the structures of mental phenomena one states the variation in the vertical or horizontal arrangement of the space – depth.

Keywords: metaphorical modeling, metaphor, the parameter «depth», consciousness, the unconscious, psychic phenomenon
