Abstract: The article analyzes efforts by Chinese literary scholars to develop the most important for modernism categories of subject and subjectness. A special attention is paid to the works of Chinese scholar and critic Liu Zaifu, which summarize the essence of the two related processes in the development of post-Mao literature, i.e. to return human values to literature, and to find new subjectness.
