Abstract: The article is devoted to the research of function of pictures in N. Gogol's poem "Dead souls". Pictures are considered as a part of interior space in dwelling of Sobakevich and Pljushkin. The special attention is given to revealing of an original visual code from the point of view of the organization of art space. The analysis of a visual code allows to draw conclusions that pictures are one of the basic sources of spatial metamorphosises providing an explication of an author's metaplot in visions.
