Name: Postpositions and their functioning in Tungusic declension system

Abstract: The paper deals with the issues of forming postpositions as an independent class of connecting (syntactic) words in the Tungusic languages and consistently analyses their formal and functional features. Two groups of pospositions have been identified: those derived from non-semantic nouns and those derived from verbal stems: predominantly coverbal adverbs. As a result of the analysis of the structure and semantics, it has been shown that the formation and development of the Tungisic adnominal postpositions has been stimulated within the framework of two types of possessive con-structions: morpho-syntactic and lexico-syntactic ones. The former type of the constructions in question is characteristic of the Northern and Southern Tungusic language groups, the latter one is peculiar to the Manchu language. The formation and development of verb-derived or adverbal-participle postpositions have followed their own ways of gram-maticalization: some of them began functioning in possessive phrases behaving like adnominal postpositions, and some another ones were used in the postposition to an autonomous word, the distiction to the case suffixes being formal separability.
