Abstract: The article discusses the Khakas myths and legends (purunɢy kip-chookhtar) and historical legends (polɢan kip-chookhtar). Non-fairytale prose is one of the most substantial components of the Khakas folklore heritage. This paper discusses the genre features of Khakas non-fairytale prose that have been little studied until recently. Non-fairytale prose are one of the most important sources for studying the material and spiritual culture of an ethnos. Based on archival materials, an attempt is made at making a genre differentiation of non-fairytale prose. There have been no studies considering the issues of terminology of non-fairy-tale prose. As the latest volume in the Academy of Sciences series “Monuments of Folklore of the Peoples of Siberia and the Far East”, “Khakas Folktale Prose” includes works selected from collections housed in the Manuscript Collection of the Khakas Research Institute of the Republic of Khakasia (in the city of Abakan), and materials collected by multidisciplinary folklore expeditions conducted by the Department of Folklore of the Peoples of Siberia and the M. I. Glinka Novosibirsk State Conservatory. The selected texts display great artistic value and are based on genuine recordings that faithfully reflect the oral nature of their original performance. The volume’s main corpus contains 79 texts. The texts placed in the main corpus mention all known variants, either published previously or taken from archival collections. This made it possible to characterize the extant material according to its breadth of distribution. The presentation of native texts was made in strict correspondence with archival recordings in a way that preserves their uniqueness and characteristic features. One particularly valuable feature of this volume is that it contains texts in all four Khakas dialects: Sagai, Shor, Kachin, and Kyzyl. The broader scholarly community will gain the first systematic access to a significant number of texts of Khakas myths, legends and historical legends that reflect the actual distribution of folkloric works in all areas of the Khakasia. Each text faithfully preserves lexical, phonetic, syntactic and other dialectal features. The complete accuracy in rendering the material is one of the key methodological principles that guided this scholarly edition.
