Abstract: The article is devoted to the insufficiently known poem by N. M. Kugushev, a literary man who has made an attempt to popularize Russian history in poetical form before publication of N. M. Karamzin’s «History of the Russian State». This work represents a striking example of artistic comprehension of the past in the framework of cultural paradigm of the certain epoch. The narrative strategies of the author which aspires to recreate the true events relying the annalistic sources and interprets them in accordance with the perception of a sentimental person of the beginning of the XIX century are analyzed.
