Abstract: The article examines the Dionysian imagery in Vyacheslav Ivanov’s «Crown of Sonnets» in the context of his research «The Hellenic Religion of Suffering God». The spatial structure of the poetic world of the «Crown of Sonnets», organized according to the mythological three-level model of the world is considered. These spaces penetrate each other thanks to the images which contain the implicit seme ‘mediator’ in the meaning. A special attention is paid to the images connected with the substance of fire, and also to the ambivalent images of Kriophoros and the Serpent which represent the poetic realization of V. Ivanov’s idea about the presence of Dionysian principals in the Christianity. In particular, the image of the crucified Serpent is the embodiment of the dying and reviving Dionysus-Christ.

Keywords: Vyacheslav Ivanov, F. Nietzsche, Crown of Sonnets, mythological model of the world, Dionysus religion, Christianity, ambivalent poetic images
