Name: The manifestation of the process of concept formation in the orthography of the word (on the material of the English Language)

Authors: L. A. Kozlova

Issue 2, 2015Pages 161-171
UDK: 811.111DOI:

Abstract: Starting from the understanding of the concept as a dynamic, ‘becoming’ entity and the fact that most concepts find their representation in the word, the author makes an attempt to reveal the connection between the processes of a concept formation and the reflection of these processes in the orthography of the English compound words. As is well known, the orthography of many English compounds varies, and they may be written as one word, hyphenated or written separately. The author supposes that this variation iconically reflects the process of a new concept formation, thus revealing the dynamic, ‘beconing’ character of the concept. In such cases when the semantics of the noun-attribute and the semantics of the head noun reveal the tendency of integrating into one meaning, denoting one concept, their emerges a certain asymmetry between the cognitive (semantic) integrity and the two-words orthography. The reduction of a word-phrase into a compound word results in the elimination of this asymmetry and the establishment of quantity iconicity: one concept – one meaning – one word.

Keywords: concept, dynamism, orthography, cognitive/formal integrity, quantity iconicity
