Abstract: The article attempts at representing an integral cognitive and semiot-ic approach to the phenomenon of direct and indirect referent naming in text. It de-fines the role of differentiating the process of naming and the result of naming (di-rect and indirect names). Considering this differentiation it becomes real to set correspondences between the stages of conceptual referent construal and results of their linguistic naming. Semiotic and cognitive aspects of direct and indirect naming are viewed as interdependent, whereas the basics of this independency are constitut-ed by peculiar character of construal and naming operations.

Keywords: names and naming, direct, indirect, entrenched names, conceptual referent, entrenchment, entrenchment stages
